The Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) recently hosted a CIC Fellows Sharing Session at Sheung Shui campus, featuring Ir Rocky POON, Life President of the Hong Kong Federation of Electrical & Mechanical Contractors Limited. Ir POON shared his insights on the essential qualities of a master craftsman, drawing from his extensive industry experience.

Ir POON emphasised that craftsmanship and integrity are the cornerstones of a successful career in the industry. True craftsmanship transcends mere technical skill, which demands a deep-seated respect for the craft, a commitment to continuous improvement, and unwavering integrity to build trust with clients and employers.

He further highlighted the crucial roles of teamwork and effective communication, emphasising that proactive communication significantly enhances efficiency and problem-solving. Regarding safety, he urged students to cultivate a robust safety culture within HKIC, learning from Japanese exemplary safety management practices.

Ir POON also underscored the importance of emotional intelligence and responsibility, motivating students to develop empathy and adaptability. He urged them to embrace technological advancements, actively learning and applying technologies such as Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), Building Information Modeling (BIM), and digital twin technology to advance their careers in this dynamic field.

Concluding with the HKIC's motto, "To dedicate • To excel", Ir POON inspired students to embrace challenges, strive for excellence, and become master craftsmen who make positive contributions to society.
