Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) has been providing quality construction training in Hong Kong for over 50 years.
In December 2025, HKIC hosted a CIC Fellows Sharing Session at the Sheung Shui campus, welcoming Ir HON Chi-keung, former Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the Development Bureau, to share his extensive engineering experience and insights on future industry trends with staff and students.
Drawing on past projects, Ir HON stressed that the success of engineering projects relies not only on technology but also on cross-departmental collaboration, maintaining effective communication with the public, and possessing the determination to withstand pressure.
Ir HON also introduced the mission and work of the Building Technology Research Institute, explaining how the institute promotes innovation in construction through technology to improve industry efficiency and quality. Its efforts help the industry boost productivity, reduce costs, and move toward intelligent construction.
During the Q&A session, students asked about the impact of new technologies on workforce demand in construction. Ir HON noted that although innovations like Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) can reduce physical labour, skilled professionals are still needed to operate and manage these systems. As the industry advances toward greater automation and intelligence, he encouraged students to proactively learn new technologies and prepare for the era of smart construction.
